But when applying for campus placements, scholarships, or master’s programs, you are asked for your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

1. The Fundamental Difference: SGPA vs CGPA

Before performing the math, it is essential to understand what these two acronyms represent:

  • SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average): Measures your academic performance strictly within one specific semester.
  • CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average): The cumulative weighted index measuring your academic performance across all completed semesters of your degree.

2. Method 1: The Official Credit-Weighted Formula

In almost all Indian technical universities (such as AKTU, VTU, SPPU, MAKAUT, Anna University, and JNTU), different semesters carry different credit totals. For example, Semester 1 may carry 20 credits, while Semester 3 with extensive lab courses carries 24 credits.

Because semesters are not equal in academic workload, universities use the Credit-Weighted Cumulative Formula:

CGPA = Σ(SGPAᵢ × Creditsᵢ) ÷ Σ(Creditsᵢ)

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Step 1: List each completed semester's SGPA.
  2. Step 2: Note down the total registered credits for each semester from your grade sheet.
  3. Step 3: Multiply each SGPA by its semester credits to calculate Semester Credit Points.
  4. Step 4: Add all Semester Credit Points together to get your Total Grade Points.
  5. Step 5: Add all semester credits together to get your Total Cumulative Credits.

If your college assigns the exact same number of credits to every semester (for example, exactly 20 credits in every semester), the credits cancel out algebraically:

Caution: Do not rely on the simple average if your university transcripts list different semester credit totals. Even a 0.05 discrepancy can impact placement eligibility criteria!
